A memory foam mattress needs a flat surface that has a lot of support. The idea behind a memory foam mattress is that it gives to the contours of your body. If it is not on a sturdy surface that offers support all over, you will not get the full benefit of this type mattress. A memory foam mattress can give relief from back pain, and it provides added warmth, when it is properly set up. The most important thing is that it not be allowed to sag at all to get the most benefit.

A lot of people say a platform type bed is the  best bed style for a memory foam mattress. A platform is basically just a flat surface, so it offers all the support you could need. It needs to have a little air circulation, so a flat surface where there is not much air moving could be a problem. Platform beds are made of sturdy materials like wood or metal, and come in a variety of styles. The mattress needs that support, and it needs to “breathe” to stay fresh. Especially when they are new, a foam memory mattress can have a smell, which wears off in time.

Platform beds are available in many style and some have headboards. You can add anything to a platform type bed easily. Some platform type beds can be raised or lowered to make it fit you better.

Foam mattresses are usually about 10 inches thick but they do come in different thicknesses. They also come in all sizes of beds, and the same support rules apply. A  base that is about a foot deep, or a little more, is a good fit for height of your bed. The platform itself can sit on the floor, or you may put legs under it, but it will need a lot of support.

Similar to a platform style bed, you can put your mattress on the floor. That makes for a very low lying bed, but you would have the  uniform support you need. Cleaning might become an issue, but it is something to think about.

Slat beds are ok, if the slats are close together. They should be no more than four or five inches apart. They come with either wood or steel construction, and either one is fine.  You may put a piece of plywood between the slats and the mattress, which would make for more uniform support.

Standard box springs are not a good idea. The springs act as shock absorbers, which is the opposite of what you need in a memory foam mattress. A box spring will work though, if you put plywood or something similar, between the mattress and the springs.

It is important to keep memory foam mattresses flat. It is not a good idea then, to up them in sofa beds or Murphy beds, or anything where it is likely to be bent or folded.
